The Miracle of Miles

4 Days Missing

Thousands of Acres

Central Oregon Sagebrush & Canyons

One Miracle

"On May 1, 2026, I thought I had lost my market lamb forever.  Four days later, God wrote a different ending."

What began as an ordinary training session became a journey of faith, perseverance, and the incredible power of community.

The Miracle

May 1, 2026

I remember the moment I ran. Everything got quiet behind me, and before I knew it, I was alone.

The sagebrush stretched farther than I had ever seen. Juniper trees cast long shadows as the sun disappeared behind the canyon rim. I could still hear faint voices calling my name, but every step I took seemed to carry me farther away from home.

Night in the desert is different when you’re alone.

The wind sounds louder.

Every rustle feels dangerous.

And the dark feels endless.

I didn’t know where I was going.

I only knew I was lost.

But even out there, surrounded by miles of sagebrush, steep canyons, predators, and silence, I was never truly alone.

While my family searched canyon after canyon, prayed prayer after prayer, and refused to give up on me, God was already writing a bigger story.

For four days I wandered through country far too big for one little sheep. I crossed rocky drainages, hid in the brush, searched for water, and somehow stayed safe through every night.

No predators.

No cliffs.

No injuries.

Looking back… it feels impossible.

But miracles usually do.

Every time my family thought hope was fading, God kept leading them forward. He placed people in the right place at the right time. He led them to tracks, to clues, and to moments that made no sense except by His grace.

And then…

I was found.

Not broken.

Not harmed.

Just thirsty, tired, and ready to come home.

From Our Family

From our perspective, this is what makes the story impossible to explain without God.

The lamb didn’t simply slip out of a pen. Owen was sprinting him as part of his normal training routine when, within seconds, he disappeared into the vast Central Oregon sagebrush and canyon country, still wearing his halter. Our biggest fear being that he was hung up somewhere unable to get lose and was suffering.

We searched for four days. We walked miles on foot, drove countless roads, climbed canyon rims, searched drainage after drainage, and prayed without ceasing. Our 4-H family and friends showed up giving up their weekend to help search.  A true showing of community.

Still, there were no birds circling - and an invisible force kept pressing us to not give up.

On Day 3 hope began to return.  We found a faint halter drag near a track separating it from all the deer tracks. We were sure it was his.  The tracks came and went, but led to the lower valley pivots. lush grass, sprinklers, but no lamb.

With the other side opening to Crooked River Ranch, we realized how vast this search really was. Without a miracle, finding him felt nearly impossible.

Exhausted but not defeated,  All parties who helped in the search went to bed that night and continued to pray - believing the lamb would not suffer, and believing that God was already at work watching over him where we could not.

Day 4

Day four was the hardest.

Physically, we were exhausted. Emotionally, we were running on hope alone.

We got up before sunrise one last time, believing Miles might have found relief from the heat in the lush grass surrounding the pivot fields.

Our plan was simple, to drive to the pivots and glass every inch of the valley one final time.

But fatigue caught up with us.

We got out of the house later than planned, and at the last minute we changed course. Instead of driving straight to the pivots, we decided to head up McKenzie Canyon, where we could overlook the entire valley from above.

Looking back, that last-minute decision changed everything.

Driving up the drainage, we knew the odds were impossible. One lamb. Thousands of acres. Four days gone.

We quietly prayed one more time.

If we were going to find him, it wouldn’t be because we were lucky.  It would be because God chose to place him in our path.

The Miracle Continues

As we slowly drove up the drainage that morning, something happened that still leaves us speechless.

The road wound through the bottom of a deep drainage, with steep canyon walls rising on both sides. You couldn’t see what was on the opposite hillside until it crested into view.

At that exact moment, our lamb appeared on the opposite side of the drainage and began walking down the hillside toward the road.

Not five minutes earlier.

Not five minutes later.

The exact moment.

Had we arrived even seconds sooner, he would still have been hidden behind the ridge. Had we arrived seconds later, he would have disappeared over the other side of the canyon, and we never would have seen him.

For one brief moment, in thousands of acres of canyon country, God brought our paths together.

We slammed the truck into park and jumped out in the middle of the road.

“There he is!”

But after surviving four days alone in the wilderness, he wasn’t about to let us catch him. He bolted up the opposite side of the drainage.

Owen took off after him.

We launched the drone.

For a few hopeful minutes, we watched and searched…

Then he disappeared again.  Still wearing his halter.  Our hearts sank.  We had seen him.  We knew he was alive.  And somehow…he was gone again.

But this time was different.  Hope had replaced despair.

We immediately called every person who had searched with us the day before. Without hesitation, they dropped what they were doing and came back. Once again, family, friends, neighbors, and fellow 4-H families spread across McKenzie Canyon believing today might finally be the day.

There were homes scattered throughout the canyon, dogs in backyards, livestock in pastures, and predators roaming the surrounding hills. We prayed that if he wandered onto someone’s property, it would be the right one.

One of the families helping us search had purchased 4-H lambs from Owen. They lived right there on McKenzie Canyon.  While helping search, the dad received a phone call from his daughter.

“Dad…the dogs are barking like crazy.”

Thinking a coyote or another predator had wandered near their sheep, he told her to put the dogs inside. He would come home and check everything once he finished searching.

When he pulled into his property…

He couldn’t believe what he was seeing.

Standing quietly in the corner of a fence was our missing lamb.  More than two miles from where we had first spotted him that morning.  Not running.  Not frightened.  Not alone.

Standing beside the very lambs he had grown up with as a baby.

Out of every canyon…

Every pasture…

Every fence…

The lamb somehow found familiar faces.

He immediately called the search party.  The lamb was standing in the corner of the fence next to his friends.

This time, we didn’t rush.  Quietly, we surrounded him. Slowly, we closed the distance pushing him into the corner where we were able to catch him.

After four days…  He was finally safe!  Still wearing his halter.  Not a scratch on him.  Just thirsty.  Just hungry.

Looking back, there are simply too many moments we cannot explain.  The exact second our paths crossed.  The strength to survive four days completely alone.  Finding his way more than ten miles through rugged canyon country.

Walking into the one pasture where familiar sheep were waiting.

The right people.

In the right place.

At exactly the right time.

Only God.

That experience forever changed our family.

Because of the miles he traveled…

Because of the countless miles we searched…

Because of the miracle we witnessed…

Our lamb earned a new name.

Miles.

Not because that was the name we gave him at birth.

But because every mile tells the story of God’s faithfulness.

Every mile reminds us that hope is never wasted.

Every mile reminds us that the Good Shepherd still searches for the one.

And every time someone asks why he’s called Miles, we have the privilege of telling them this story.

Jesus once told a story about a shepherd who left the ninety-nine to search for one lost sheep until he found it.

For four unforgettable days…

Our lamb was the one.

And through it all, we learned something we’ll never forget:

God still performs miracles.

He still answers prayer.

And He never stops pursuing the one who is lost.

“Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Doesn’t he leave the ninety-nine… and go after the lost sheep until he finds it?” — Luke 15:4
